Wideband Voice: Next Generation Sound

High-fidelity VoIP has finally arrived, with the use of G.722.2 codec and Snom’s recently launched handset modification.

Narrow band codecs normally sample a frequency range between 200 - 3400 Hz. G.722.2 effectively doubles this range to 50 – 7,000 Hz. The enhanced voice quality will greatly improve the intelligibility of your calls. Meaning you will hear the difference between fricative sounds such as “s” and “f”. The second reason comes the way G.722.2 has been designed. Unlike G.711 and G.729, G.722.2 can respond to differing situations, from clean environments to background noise conditions, such as music or traffic. So not only do you get better quality sound, you also get an adaptive codec that responds to the noise level around you.

Snom has cleverly coupled this codec with a new handset, which has been carefully designed to improve voice quality. Changes to the size and type of cavity behind handset microphones and speakers affect audio quality, so a lot attention has been given to these areas. The handset can be used with any Snom 3xx VoIP telephone.

Of course, there is one downside. Either end of the call needs to be on VoIP and on wideband handsets. If the call breaks out to the PSTN then it will be back to narrow band. It will take years for this to spread across all of the PSTN, but VoIP is again pushing voice to the next level.
